Habitat

Dry woods and second growth shrubby areas.

Associates

Distribution

Across middle and southern Canada to AK, south to NY and PA, northern OH, northern IN, northern IL, WI and MN, and south through the Appalachians.

Morphology

Low evergreen from deeply buried, horizontal stems, erect stems to 30cm high, tree-like with many forked, terete branches. Leaves linear, acute, 3-5mm long, in 6 ranks evenly spaced around the stem, the lower leaves of the stem spreading, prickly. Cones (strobiles) to 6 cm long, terminal, sessile, solitary or in groups of 2-7.

Notes

Produces spores from late August to mid November.

The branchlets of this species are rounded in cross section. It is similar to D. hickeyi which has more appressed lower stem leaves.
