Distribution
Primarily near the coast from southern CT to central FL west to MS, inland in mountains to southern OH and eastern KY and TN. Also in AR.
Morphology
Perennial from a crown or short, stout rhizome; stems 40-100 cm, spreading-villous at least near the base to villous puberulent above; leaves opposite, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, lance-elliptic, or elliptic-oblanceolate, more or less sessile, glandular-punctate, evidently hairy to subglabrous; inflorescence corymbiform, dense, more or less flat-topped; involucres 8-11 mm, often with sessile dark glands, otherwise glabrous or slightly hairy; involucral bracts imbricate, narrow and long-acuminate, the inner white-scarious at the tip and sometimes with broader, more rounded, mucronate tips than the outer; flowers 5; corolla white 4-5.5 mm.
