Habitat

Pine barrens, wet meadows, pond margins, usually in sandy soil.

Associates

Distribution

MA to FL and LA, primarily on the coastal plain or near the coast; var. leucolepis occurs from NY south and var. novae-angliae is local in MA and RI (treated as a distinct species in New England).

Morphology

Perennial from a crown or short, stout rhizome; stem 40-100 cm, hirtellous or puberulent, sometimes merely strigose; leaves opposite, lance-oblong to linear-oblong or oblanceolate, toothed or entire, sessile, glandular-punctate; involucre 5-7 mm; involucral bracts imbricate, narrow, tapering to a long-acuminate or mucronately subattenuate point, villous-puberulent and frequently also atomiferous-glandular, the scarious margins mostly inconspicuous; flowers 5, corolla white, 3-4 mm.

Photographed in southern NJ so these are no doubt var. leucolepis.
