Habitat

Dry to mesic open woods or woodland edges, in rocky or sandy soil.

Associates

 

Distribution

Southern NH to southeast MN, south to GA and AR.

Morphology

Perennial from a crown or short caudex; stems solitary, 60-150 cm, puberulent in the inflorescence; leaves mostly glabrous but gland-dotted, opposite, sessile or subsessile, lanceolate, broadly rounded at the base, serrate, acuminate or long acute, venation pinnate; involucres 4.5-6.5 mm; involucral bracts imbricate, broadly rounded to obtuse, villous-puberulent and often also atomiferous-glandular; flowers 5(6), white.

Wetland indicator: NA

A rare species along the northern edge of its range. The plants in these images were cultivated from seed and are most robust than wild plants since they are growing in full sun and mostly without competition.
