Distribution

ME and Quebec to WI and IA, south to GA and MO.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial from slender rhizomes; stem 0.5-1.5+ m, glabrous below the short-hairy inflorescence; leaves thin, pale underneath, moderately scabrous to subglabrous, broadly lanceolate to ovate, 8-20 cm long and 3-8 cm wide, long-acuminate, serrate (usually sharply so), more or less abruptly contracted near the base and decurrent onto the 1.5-6 cm petiole; upper leaves usually alternate; disk yellow, 1-2 cm wide; involucral bracts very loose, thin, green, ciliate, sometimes hispidulous on the back, attenuate-acuminate, at least some usually surpassing the disk; rays 8-15, 1.5-3.5 cm.
