Taxonomy

Family: Cistaceae

Habitat

In sand in pine barrens or on acid rocks.

Associates

 

Distribution

On acid rocks from ME to Newfoundland and in pine barrens from NH to DE.

Morphology

Matt forming woody shrub; leaves linear-subulate, 3-6 mm, loosely erect to somewhat spreading, green, sparingly villous; pedicels 5-15 mm; petals 5, yellow, convolute in bud; stamens 8-20; fruits cylindric, loosely persistent after maturity.

Flowers May to June

Wetland indicator: NA

Occurs with H. tomentosa in pine barrens but less likely to be found on coastal dunes. The hybrid of the two is H. ×spectabilis.
