Habitat

Wet meadows and shores.

Distribution

Newfoundland and Quebec to British Columbia, south to NJ, OH, IL, KS, and CO.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial from a rhizome; stems erect, 60+ cm; leaves often ascending, mostly lanceolate to narrowly oblong or narrowly elliptic, 2-4 cm long, 3-5(-7)-nerved, broadly obtuse or rounded at the weakly clasping base, the basal margins of a pair of leaves meeting around the stem; inflorescence somewhat compact; sepals lanceolate, acute, 4.5-6.5 mm; petals 3.5-4 mm; stamens 14-21; styles 3(4), to 1 mm; fruit red-purple, ellipsoid-conic, 5-7 mm.

Flowers July to September

Wetland indicator: FACW

Similar to, and can hybridize with, H. canadense L. which has leaves that taper to the base with 1(-3) primary veins.
