Distribution

Newfoundland and Quebec to Manitoba, south to FL and TX.

Morphology

Annual or perennial; stems 10-80 cm, usually much-branched above; leaves lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, 1-4 cm, obtuse to subacute, broadly obtuse to rounded at the base, 3-5-nerved; inflorescence commonly widely branched; bracteal leaves subulate, 1-4 mm; sepals linear-oblong, acute, about equaling the fruit; petals 1.5-2.5 mm; stamens 5-16; styles 3, under 1 mm; fruit green, ellipsoid, unilocular, 2-3.5 mm.

Wetland indicator: FACW

Commonly found in disturbed moist sites like shores. A similar species is H. boreale (Britton) E.P. Bicknell which has leafy, elliptic bracts and obtuse sepals that are much shorter than the fruit.
