Bogs, swamps, wet woods.

Distribution

On the coastal plain from Nova Scotia to FL and LA.

Morphology

Shrub to 1-3 m; twigs finely puberulent; leaves coriaceous, evergreen, oblanceolate, obtuse, cuneate at the base, punctate on the underside, the margins with 1-3 minute appressed teeth on each side near the apex; flowers mostly 6-8-merous; staminate flowers in small, pedicellate clusters; pistillate flowers mostly solitary; fruit black, 4-5 mm, firm, dry, persistent; nutlets smooth on the back.

Sometimes grown for its compact habit (in sun) and evergreen foliage. Hardy to USDA Zone 4.
