Taxonomy

Family: Ericaceae

Habitat

Dry, sandy pine-barrens and on outcrops of acid rocks in mountains.

Associates

 

Distribution

Coastal plain of NJ, NC, and SC, and in a few places inland to the high mountains (mainly Smoky and Blue Ridge).

Morphology

Widely branched evergreen shrub 10-100 cm; leaves alternate to opposite, ovate to oblong, 6-12 mm; pedicels 5-10 mm, glabrous or stipitate-glandular; corolla subrotate; petals 5, 3-4 mm, white or pinkish; stamens mostly 10, anthers purple; fruit 3-4 mm.

Wetland indicator: FACU

The genus Leiophyllum is monospecific. The species has also been included with other species in the genus Dendrium in the past and some current treatments place it in the genus Kalmia.
