Taxonomy

Family: Scrophulariaceae

Habitat

Wet sandy or muddy ground.

Associates

 

Distribution

Widespread. Only absent from a few western states.

Morphology

Low, branching, annual or biennial herb. Leaves opposite, entire or slightly toothed. Flowers axillary, pale blue, the later ones often cleistogamous; anthers 2; lower pair of stamens sterile; pedicels mostly shorter than the subtending leaves.

Notes

Flowers mid June to September.

Wetland indicator: Obligate

The plants were found growing on muddy ground of a recently drained beaver pond in the Adirondacks.
