Taxonomy

Family: Caprifoliaceae

Habitat

Moist or dry woods and cold bogs.

Associates

 

Distribution

Circumpolar, south in North America to NJ, WV, northern IN, MN, and CA.

Morphology

Barely woody evergreen; stems trailing and creeping, producing numerous short, suberect, leafy branches to 10 cm, the branches with a slender terminal peduncle to 10 cm; leaves firm, short-petiolate, broadly oval to obovate, 1-2 cm; flowers nodding, in pairs at the end of the peduncle; corolla pink to white, funnelform to campanulate, 10-15 mm, shallowly 5-lobed, flaring from near the top of the calyx, hairy inside; stamens 4, paired, included, inserted near the base of the corolla tube.

The monospecific genus Linnaea was named in honor of Carl Linnaeus. The name was in use by prior to his formal description of this species in 1753.
