Habitat

Open, moist or dry upland woods.

Associates

 

Distribution

ME to SC, west to WI, eastern MN, IL, KY, and AL.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial from long, stoloniform rhizomes; stems 30-90 cm, glabrous or sparsely hairy, rarely branched; leaves mostly in whorls of 4, sometimes more, punctate, narrowly or broadly lanceolate, 5-10 cm long, hairy beneath, widely spreading; flowers on spreading pedicels 2-5 cm long from the middle and upper leaf axils; calyx lobes lance-oblong, 2-4 mm; petals 6-8 mm, oblong or elliptic, yellow with dark lines.

The whorled leaves and axillary flowers distinguish this species from other members of the genus.
