Family: Nartheciaceae

 

Habitat

Wet pine savanna.

Associates

 

Distribution

Historically known from from NJ to SC but may now only occur in a small range in southern NJ.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial; basal leaves erect, 10-20 cm long and 1-2 mm wide; cauline leaves few, bract-like; raceme crowded, 3-6 cm; pedicels bracteate; tepals 4-6 mm, the petals scarious-margined; fruit fusiform, long-pointed, 10-14 mm, seeds fusiform, prolonged at each end into a long filiform appendage.

Flowers June to July

Wetland indicator: FACW

Has been considered for federal listing. While locally abundant in a few counties in southern NJ no populations are currently known outside of the state.
