Taxonomy

Family: Orchidaceae

 

Synonymous with Listera cordata (L.) R. Br.

 

Habitat

Sphagnum bogs and swamps.

Associates

 

Distribution

Circumboreal, south in North America to NY, PA, MI, MN, and in mountains to NC and NM.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial to 25 cm; leaves 1-3 cm, shorter than the peduncle, truncate or subcordate at the base, but also abruptly contracted at the point of attachment; axis, pedicels, and ovary glabrous; bracts minute, 1 mm; flowers up to 25, green to purplish or reddish; sepals and lateral petals 2-2.5 mm, ovate oblong; lip 3-5 mm, with 2 projecting lateral teeth near the base, cleft to the middle or below into divergent linear lobes; column 0.5 mm.
