Habitat

Shallow water. Swamps, bogs.

 Distribution

MA south to FL, west to central NY, southwest PA, eastern KY, western TN, and LA.

Morphology

Perennial from a stout rhizome. Leaves parallel veined, waxy, simple, the blades elliptic, 6-20 cm long and about 1/3 as wide, acute, narrowing to an obtuse or acute base. Flowers perfect, bright yellow, covering a linear spadix 2-5 cm long; spathe a tubular leaf surrounding the base of the 20-40 cm long scape; stamens 4-6; ovary unilocular, with 1 ovule; fruit a brown or green utricle (thin-walled, one seeded, inflated fruit)

Notes

Flowers May to June.

Wetland indicator: Obligate

A plant of concern in several states. Occasionally grown as an ornamental in water gardens.
