Taxonomy

Family: Ericaceae

 

Synonymous with Pyrola secunda L.

Habitat

Moist woods, cedar swamps.

Associates

 

 Distribution

Cicumboreal; in North America south to NJ, MD, IN, MN, and NM.

Morphology

Rhizomatous herb to 20 cm; leaves elliptic to broadly ovate or subrotund, 1.5-4 cm, obtuse or rounded, entire to crenate-serrate, obtuse or rounded at the base, often separated by conspicuous internodes; raceme crowded, secund; sepals semi-orbicular to ovate, 0.5-1 mm; petals white or greenish, 5 mm; anthers 1.5-2 mm, truncate, opening by large pores, rounded at base; style elongate, exsert at anthesis.

Notes

Flowers July to August

Wetland indicator: FAC

Differs from Pyrola spp. in that the style is both straight and exserted from the corolla at anthesis.
