Taxonomy

Family: Thelypteridaceae

 

Synonymous with Thelypteris simulata (Davenport) Nieuwl.

Habitat

Swamps and moist woods, in acid soil.

Associates

 

Distribution

Nova Scotia to VA and WV, disjunct in the driftless area of WI.

Morphology

Rhizomatous perennial; petioles of sterile leaf blades to 20 cm and of the fertile to 35 cm, mostly a little shorter than the blades; blades to 50 cm long and 15 cm wide; costae and veins only sparsely or scarcely hairy; veins simple, those of the sterile segments in 4-5 pairs, of the fertile ones in 6-7 pairs; indusia margined with minute glands.

Notes

Producing spores in August and September

Wetland indicator: FACW

Similar to marsh fern (Thelypteris palustris) which has forked veins and indusia ciliate or glabrous (lacking marginal glands).
