Habitat

In rapidly flowing water of large rivers.

Associates

 

Distribution

Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and ME to GA, west to southern Ontario, WV, KY, OK, and LA; disjunct in WI; also in Central America.

Morphology

Submerged aquatic; stems attached to stones or rocks by fleshy disks, 2-10 cm, usually branched; leaves alternate, dilated into a pair of stipule-like appendages at the base, 1-10 cm long, very narrow and entire or commonly more or less forked into numerous narrow segments; spathe 2-3 mm, pedicels eventually to 1 cm; fruit 2.5-3 mm.

The only member of this primarily tropical family that occurs in temperate North America. Plants rarely flower.
