Taxonomy

Family: Fagaceae

Habitat

Upland or rocky woods.

Associates

 

 Distribution

ME south to northern GA in the Appalachians, west to southern IL and northern MS; disjunct in southern MI.

Morphology

Deciduous tree to 30 m. Bark dark, thick, deeply furrowed. Leaves with rounded teeth, sparsely hairy beneath. Cap of acorn is hemispheric with comparatively few scales; nut dark brown.

Notes

Flowers mid May

Wetland indicator: Upland

Some sources still use the name Quercus prinus L. for this species, however the identity of the type materials for that name have not been clearly established.
