Taxonomy

Family: Fagaceae

Habitat

Bottomland woods along streams. Primarily moist to wet sites.

Associates

 

 Distribution

Mostly restricted to the southeast. The most northern population occurs in southern NJ.

Morphology

Deciduous tree 50-80' high. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate, entire to 3-lobed at the apex. Acorns solitary, to 1/2" long and wide, the cap shallow with appressed scales; the nut striped with brown and black. Bark dark and rather smooth.

Wetland indicator: Facultative

Seedlings often highly lobed and evergreen. Hardy to zone 6, somewhat of a weed in hardiness zones 7-9. Can be effective as a shade and street tree.
