Mesic to wet woods, forming dense colonies.

Nova Scotia to southern Ontario and OH, south in mountains to GA and AL.
Morphology
Shrub or small tree to 10 m. Leaves evergreen, leathery, entire, oblong-ovate, glabrous above, scurfy-tomentose beneath. Flowers rose to white, upper petal spotted with yellow or orange adaxially; calyx lobes 2-4 mm; pedicels and ovaries stipitate-glandular.

Wetland indicator: FAC
Can be distinguished from the more southern R. catawbiense by the longer calyx lobes and glandular pedicels and ovaries. Locally abundant in a few locations in the Catskills of NY where these pictures were taken.
