Family: Anacardiaceae

Habitat

Open, dry places.

Associates

 

 Distribution

New England south to FL, west WI to TX.

Morphology

Shrub or small tree. Leaves shiny above, pinnately compound; leaflets 7-21, entire or with a few shallow teeth; rachis winged between each pair of leaflets. Fruit red, slightly flattened, pilose.

Notes

Flowers June to August

Wetland indicator: Upland

The var. latifolia Engl. (shown here) occurs in the Chicago region. The specific epithet is also spelled copallina. Also called Winged Sumac
